Are Girls That Listen to Rock More Easy
Hi im a 16 year old girl that listens to mostly heavy metal and rock, my friends think im weird and boys seem to think im weird because i listen to music like that and not a lot of girls do. I dont dress like a 'metal head' or an 'emo' so no one knows that i listen to that kind of music but i dont feel confident telling people becasue of what they think and there reactions
If your "friends" think you're weird because you share a different taste in music to them, they don't sound like brilliant friends, I'll be honest. I had 'friends' like that when I was in high school. Put it this way - I haven't seen any of them now in years. They went their way, did their own thing, and that's that really. It boils down to the simple fact that we clearly had little in common.
As for boys, there are many alternative males out there. I wouldn't worry about that. You're only 16, you have well enough time to meet lads.
The rock/metal community is still alive and kicking, and you're not weird in the slightest.

You will when you move on from high school. I realise that's a bit limiting now, but you'll meet new people at some point.
Don't worry - once you're a little bit older, you'll find that there's a lot of people who enjoy heavy metal. Those people who think it's "weird" maybe just don't see the appeal in that genre of music at the moment, but people's tastes change with experience.
By your friends saying it's "weird", they're not showing how brilliant a friend they are. You may find people in higher school who have similar interests to you.
Also, you don't need to dress a certain way that reflects your taste in music. Dress the way you like and, most importantly, listen to what the hell you want!
i'm in the same boat - i'm into metal and a 16 year old girl. however, i've been listening to the genre since I was about 11. I used to dress like an 'emo' till i was about 14, i'd say that's more when I got crap for it. I do get the occasional person who makes a comment, but I'd say leaving year 8/joining high school where everyone is still in the immature, cocky middle school stage is the worst. I've learnt to just embrace the reactions it's a part of you and if people can't accept your music taste then they're not worth it. You'll get to a point where all the comments + names don't get to you anymore cos you've heard them so much, so you think "**** it! I'm human"

Never be ashamed that you listen to real music. The people taking the **** probably listen to pop rubbish anyway

Haha what do you listen to out of interest? I honestly wouldn't worry about it Listen to whatever you like listening to, and like some of the other posters have said, music doesn't define who you are or how you should dress, just be you and what music you listen to shouldn't make any difference. I had this problem in about year 7-9, where people really judged you on what music you listened to, but after that, at my school, sixth form and uni, people just grew up and people understood and respected everyone has all sorts of varied music tastes.
I am 21 now but I have been into metal since I was 13. When you are your age people will be judgemental and stupid about it. I think some people are just freaked out by what they dont understand. In a few years you will be able to go to awesome concerts, bars and festivals with other like minded people. Are you on VampireFreaks? they are an alt social network you might like. People think I am weird now because I am into German metal. Dont be a sheep!!

People will always comment no matter what if they think someone's different. The metal scene is alive and kicking and has stood the test of time. Some of the best nights out here in Brum are the rocker clubs. You'll meet like minded people at some point.
As a big metal fan myself I love girls with a taste in metal, always looking to meet more as there's not many of them about xD
Hiya, I'm 20 soon, i've listened to metal/rock since i was 11, I was a very weird child, running around in a pink dress and blonde piggy tails listening to arch enemy. All through High school i got told i was weird, but guess what? I like who i am and the music i listen too, always have. Embrace it! you may turn out like me and like all kinds of music after a few years so people arent quite as confused when i tell them what music i like. Growing up though, i had a few boyfriends and best friends hate the fact that i wasnt what i seemed, as im also a keen computer gamer and have also been one since i was 13, but just keep true to yourself and you will eventually find the perfect people for you, and they will be friends for life. As for High school friends, i talk to one girl i went to school with, thats it. So once you leave and go your own way, they probably will lose contact with you (horrible to say, but its true-they slip away)
Anywho, Hope you realise that being a sheep isnt cool and once you hit 18ish and find guys who almost scream like a girl with happiness when they find a girl like you, everything gets better! High school is not the best years in life!
xxx
I had exactly the same thing from my friends in high school, because none of them listened to metal either. Unfortunately it's something you'll hear a lot (less and less as you get older though), you just have to learn to not take it seriously. As you get older you're also more likely to meet people with music taste in common, especially 18+ when you can go to rock/metal bars.
Your friends probably react with 'weird' because they're not familiar with the genre, I'd suggest introducing them to some of the 'softer/easily likeable bands to remove any stereotypes they've got in their head and stay true to what you like.
I have loads of female friends that listen to metal and similar music - it's not unusual at all - You'll realise that a lot more people listen to similar music to you than you actually think too, I was always surprised when I found out someone in school who was like some chavvy troublemaker kind of guy actually was some huge metalhead.

Don't worry about what people say, I listen to heavy metal and rock as well
I listen to heavy metal etc. and know a fair few other girls that do, you'd be surprised how many do, it's just that i've noticed some tend to keep it fairly secret or not flaunt it as they're worried what sort of reaction they would get.
Wow, I didn't know girls like you existed! Where I'm from, hardly any girls (or even guys, for that matter) listen to it. They all seem think metal is exclusively made up of screaming and shouting about killing small animals...
Unless it's Bring Me The Horizon or Asking Alexandria or something like that. Then SOME of them will listen because they get aroused by the lead singers.
It's perfectly fine to listen to heavy metal. Why wouldn't it be? Heavy metal is great!
